                              FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

                              Q:          How much does it cost to join a Southwest Michigan Select Soccer Club team?
                              A:          Costs are per player
                              U8 Academy - $50
                                  Includes fees and t-shirt
                              The below costs for U9-U19 DO NOT include uniform costs
                              U9-U14 - $300
                                  Includes fees, referees, iSoccer registration, WMYSA Soccerfest, 2 tournaments, game ball and a first aid kit
                              HS-aged Team (u15 and up) - $250
                                  Includes fees, referees, iSoccer registration, WMYSA Soccerfest, 1 tournament, game ball and a first aid kit

                              Q:          How far do you travel for games?
                              A:           Away games are typically played in the Kalamazoo area with some games extending to Battle Creek, Marshall and South Bend.  Teams playing      Elite can expect to play games in the Grand Rapids area with some extending to Lansing, Muskegon, and Grand Haven.  Recent travel to tournaments has included Traverse City, Petoskey, Lansing, Grand Rapids, and Kalamazoo as well as cities in Indiana and Illinois.

                              Q:          How many games do you play?
                              A:          The WMYSA seasons (fall and spring) include 8 games each.  If your team plays indoor soccer during the winter months the establishment will put together a schedule.  Tournament play usually involves at least 3 guaranteed games with additional games based on division and tournament structure.

                              Q:          Are you involved in tournaments? 
                              A:          SWM teams are expected to attend the club tournament.  In recent years the club has attended the Petoskey Soccer Invitational and the Fort Wayne Soccer Invitational.  Additional tournament participation is a decision made by an individual team.

                              Q:          When does the season run?
                              A:           The WMYSA fall season begins after Labor Day and runs through the first week of November.  The WMYSA spring season begins the first part of April and ends the first part of June.  An indoor season, which are not WMYSA sponsored, generally has several sessions running anywhere from November to April.  Teams may choose to participate in a session that fits their schedules.

                              Q:          How often are tryouts held?
                              A:           Group tryouts are held in June for U9-U14 Boys and U9-U19 Girls.  Group tryouts are held in November for U15-U19 Boys.  Visit the Tryouts link on swmselect.com to learn more.  If you are new to the area or someone that would like to join a team mid-season, visit the Club Directory link on swmselect.com and contact the age-appropriate coach.

                              Q:          Where are home games played?
                              A:           Home games are played at the Rockey Weed Lakeshore Soccer Complex or St. Joe Kickers Club, depending on the division.

                              Q:          Can I play up a division level?
                              A:           You may play up a division if you meet the requirements set forth by the club’s Play-Up Policy.  Visit the Forms & Policies link on swmselect.com to view the policy and application.

                              Q:          How often do you practice?
                              A:           Teams generally practice two times a week for 90 minutes.  Days and times will be decided by the team.             

                              Q:          What days are the games?
                              A:           WMYSA games are normally scheduled on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon.

                              Q:          What type of coaching will I receive?  
                              A:           All head coaches are required to become certified by the United States Soccer Federation by completing a state-certified coaching course.  All coaches involved with the players must also participate in the state’s Risk Management program.

                              Q:          Can I participate in other activities (sports, extracurriculars, etc.) while playing travel soccer?
                              A:           Every coach should set their participation expectations.  If the player and coach can agree to an arrangement the player should be allowed to participate in other activities.

                              Q:          How competitive is travel soccer?
                              A:           Travel soccer is very competitive. This is an excellent opportunity to grow as a soccer player.  Players should expect play that challenges their physical and psychological skills.
